Kya Karine

Bassist

Kya Karine, otherwise known as the Bass Princess, was born and raised in Salt Lake City, UT. Playing both upright and electric bass in a multitude of genres, Kya fondly says that where Ron Carter meets Flea is where she'd like to be.  In 2017 she graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor's Degree in Jazz Performance and quickly after graduating was working full time in her local UT music scene. She would go on to found and manage several of her own groups, including a successful 10-piece Amy Winehouse tribute ensemble with original reharmonizations and horn solis contributed to Amy's music, and her own jazz small group she calls Kya K & Co.

In 2019 she released her debut record, a holiday release called "Christmas Fire" containing reimagining of Christmas songs in the style of Rudy Van Gelder and Blue Note records. One of the tracks was added to a Spotify editorial playlist where it continues to get thousands of streams. During this time she was also featured in a Hallmark Christmas movie alongside saxophonist Dave Koz. In 2020 during the lockdown months Kya wrote and recorded all of the bass parts on the album "Reflections in a Two-Way Mirror" by rock group Band on the Moon, working with Los Angeles based producer/engineer Lior Goldenberg (Allen Stone, Alanis Morissette, Macy Gray, Luther Vandross). The album was released in 2021 and her love of this time and process led to her choosing to relocate to Los Angeles full time to pursue bass playing at the next level.

Since relocating to Los Angeles, Kya has played with artists such as Cyrille Aimée, Nnenna Freelon, Lea DeLaria, Syd Franklin, Brassroots District, and Jazz in Pink. She tracked all the upright bass on the upcoming Dread Crew of Oddwood album, set to be released March 15, 2024.

Today she spends her time freelancing all around the world on both upright and electric bass in all genres- but she always comes home to a place somewhere between jazz and rock. Kya is currently working on her next record, a jazz release under her own name.
