A new design for
enhanced playability.

The new 5/8 design marks an important step forward in making high-quality double basses more accessible to younger and developing players. Developed in collaboration with Texas educators Dr. Kate Jones and Andy Moritz, this updated design supports students with smaller hands or shorter reach, offering greater comfort, playability, and confidence from the first note.

Built to grow
with the player

Previously found only on professional instruments, the bent back design allows easier access to the upper register. The scroll also accommodates the Eastman C-Extension, giving students access to lower orchestral notes as their skills advance—all in a comfortable alternative to the standard 3/4 size without sacrificing sound, response, or performance.

ALL-NEW 5/8 DESIGN

Featuring a new design
for enhanced playability

An ergonomic design is paramount for easier reach, more natural bow placement, and improved playability—especially for developing players who need a comfortable fit without fighting the instrument.

For a fuller, more balanced 5/8 bass sound, the re-designed wider bouts provide added warmth and projection that holds its own against larger instruments.

An ergonomic design is paramount for easier reach, more natural bow placement, and improved playability—especially for developing players who need a comfortable fit without fighting the instrument.

Our popular C-Extension excels in true low-register access, supporting the lower orchestral notes students eventually need as repertoire and technique advance. Now, our all-new 5/8 size design will fit an extension just like a 3/4 or 7/8 size bass.

Confidence, From the
First Note Forward

A shorter string length and more compact body dimensions promote proper left- and right-hand technique while reducing physical strain. Refined proportions improve right-arm access for more natural bow placement and greater control across all strings, while wider bouts deliver a full, balanced, and resonant tone comparable to larger basses.

OUR BASSES

Different patterns, sizes, and features.

We offer a variety of patterns, sizes, and features to work best in classical, jazz, and many other musical styles.

Our ⅞ size bass is patterned after the work of renowned 18th century bass maker Domenico Busan.  This bigger and deeper bass is designed for the orchestra, with a larger body to provide more air and resonance to support those lower notes and fundamentals. Adding an Eastman C Extension to the Busan gives access to the low notes used in professional orchestral settings and adds to the overall resonance of the instrument.

A truly classic shape.  Featuring great volume and easy playability.

A stylish violin corner design with full-bodied sound.  Featuring a full fundamental tone and a warm, centered sound.

A slender instrument with good midrange and easy playability in all registers.

A distinctive bass pattern from the 19th century workshops of Germany and Italy.  Balances chocolatey dark sound with midrange punch.

OUR SIZES

Find your perfect bass, no matter the size.

Our basses come in different sizes to accommodate players of all ages and statures.

We offer basses in ⅛, ¼, and ½ sizes for young students. These fractional size basses are great for young students, ensuring that they will be able to play their bass in comfort no matter their age or size.

Our ⅝ size bass is made for the smaller player that still wants a big, resonant sound.  This newly designed violin corner pattern is smaller but also deeper, with an ergonomic shape that doesn’t sacrifice low-end response.

The shorter string length is perfect for smaller hands while still providing projection and clarity for the orchestra and beyond.  This pattern opens the door for even more people to play in comfort and with a big sound, no matter their size.

Unlike violin, viola, and cello, the standard bass size for adults is ¾.  By the time a student reaches high school, they will usually be ready to play a ¾ size bass.

¾ size basses are not ideal for everyone, though, and Eastman offers two additional sizes for adult bassists—⅝ and ⅞.

Our ⅞ size bass is patterned after the work of renowned 18th century bass maker Domenico Busan.  This bigger and deeper bass is designed for the orchestra, with a larger body to provide more air and resonance to support those lower notes and fundamentals.

With an arched back with a bend drawn from centuries of bass-building tradition, this larger body balances ergonomic design with premium resonance.  The Busan pattern dates back centuries, and Eastman is proud to bring this classic look, feel, and sound to more bassists.
